Postural Restoration: Why Your Body Isn’t Meant to Be Symmetrical

Many people believe that “good posture” means standing straight, shoulders back, and perfectly even on both sides.
But the human body is not built to be symmetrical — and trying to force symmetry often leads to more tension, not less.

Postural Restoration (PRI) helps us understand that the body has natural asymmetries in structure, breathing, and muscle patterns.
When those patterns become dominant or over-protective, we may experience pain, tightness, or difficulty moving.

🧠 Why Our Bodies Are Naturally Asymmetric

We have one heart, one liver, a larger right diaphragm, and a dominant breathing side.
Because of this, our bodies tend to:

  • Rotate or shift more to one side

  • Load one hip or leg more

  • Use one side of the rib cage differently

  • Stabilize with one side of the neck or jaw

This is normal — until it becomes a pattern that the body can’t get out of.

🌬️ Posture Isn’t Just Muscles — It’s Breath + Nervous System

True posture is not about holding a position.
It’s about how the body:

  • breathes

  • senses the ground

  • responds to stress

  • distributes tension and ease

When breathing becomes shallow or uneven, the body compensates through the ribs, neck, pelvis, and even the jaw — creating symptoms that look like:

  • chronic neck or low-back tension

  • hip or SI discomfort

  • TMJ tightness or clenching

  • one-sided tight hamstrings or calves

  • headaches or a “twist” in posture

🌱 A Patient Example

A patient came to me with persistent left hip and right shoulder tension.
No matter how much she stretched, the pattern returned.

Through PRI-based assessment, we discovered she was stuck in a right-dominant breathing and stance pattern, causing her pelvis and rib cage to compensate.

Once we restored left rib expansion, grounded her left side, and improved diaphragm coordination, she said:

“My hip feels lighter, and my body finally feels centered.”

We didn’t force posture.
We helped her nervous system find a new option.

🤍 The Goal Isn’t Perfect Posture — It’s Adaptive Posture

In PRI, we don’t chase symmetry.
We build a body that can shift, breathe, and respond with ease.

A regulated, adaptable body is the true definition of good posture.

📩 If you feel “stuck” in your posture…

You may benefit from an approach that includes:

  • Postural Restoration–based assessment

  • Breathing retraining

  • Myofascial and cranial work

  • Nervous system regulation
